Overview

This page exists to provide information to and receive feedback from community members who may be affected by activities of the Wells Barkerville Community Forest.  It is the online forum provided in partnership by the WBCF board and PlaceSpeak for residents of the area to provide input and comments on the direction of the community forest.  What you post here will help inform the board about decisions from the development or acquisition of a Forest Stewardship Plan to operations as they are developed this year.

The Wells Barkerville Community Forest was approved and granted to the Wells Barkerville Community Forest Corporation in 2014.  The forest covers approximately 4300 hectares to the north of the town of Wells.

The WBCFC is governed by a board of directors comprised of the District of Wells CAO, 2 councillors and 2 directors at large.  It is a Corporation that has a single shareholder, which is the District of Wells.  The WBCFC is committed to managing the forest in a sustainable way while also benefiting the local community.

Being right on the edge of town, the Wells Barkerville Community Forest contains some of the area's recreation trails, forms part of the town's viewscape, is a popular non-timber forest product harvesting area and contains one local home.  The WBCFC is committed to being open, providing information to the community and listening to public input.

Community Benefit

What does "Community Benefit" mean to you in context of the Wells Barkerville Community Forest?

If the community receives benefits that it wouldn't receive if the forest was being harvested by the big corporations or their contractors, then they are real benefits. Examples of these would be the creation of local jobs, better air quality resulting from reduced or eliminated burn piles, a developed trail network and community involvement within the forest, not just from employment, but also education and recreation.

Did anyone show up for the meeting last Thursday? I was out of town otherwise I would have attended. Is there anything from that meeting I should know about? Thanks!

To me 'Community Benefit' would mean that the majority of the work would be done locally by local people, including the harvesting, reforesting and processing. I would love to see a new small scale local 'value added' industry using the wood that is harvested. Personally I dislike the idea of working with the corporations at all, I would love to see Wells do this without them. I would be more supportive of the Community Forest taking a loan than striking a deal with West Fraser or Dunkley.
